Crosscorrelation Spectropolarimetry in Single-dish Radio Astronomy

چکیده

Modern digital correlators permit the simultaneous measurement of all four Stokes parameters using auto and crosscorrelation. We briefly outline the fundamental requirements and some practical details of performing such measurements and refer to two additional papers that provide overview and cover calibration issues in detail. Subject headings: polarization — instrumentation: polarimeters — techniques: polarimetric

Spectropolarimetry of 3CR68.1: A Highly Inclined Quasar

We present Keck spectropolarimetry of the highly polarized radio-loud quasar 3CR68.1 (z = 1.228, V = 19). The polarization increases from 5% in the red (4000Å rest-frame) to >10% in the blue (1900Å rest-frame). The broad emission lines are polarized the same as the continuum, which shows that 3CR68.1 is not a blazar as it has sometimes been regarded in the past. We also present measurements of ...

RFI subtraction from time-averaged spectroscopy using a reference horn and cross power spectra

Effective radio frequency interference (RFI) cancellation for spectroscopic applications can take place using time averaged spectra. An RFI “reference signal,” constructed from the cross power spectrum of the signals from the two polarizations of a reference horn pointed at the source of the RFI signal, in combination with cross power spectra with the signals from the Parkes telescope, allows c...

Removing Radio Interference from Contaminated Astronomical Spectra Using an Independent Reference Signal and Closure Relations

The growing level of radio frequency interference (RFI) is a recognized problem for research in radio astronomy. This paper describes an intuitive but powerful RFI cancellation technique that is suitable for radio spectroscopy where time-averages are recorded. An RFI ““ reference signal,ÏÏ is constructed from the cross power spectrum of the signals from the two polarizations of a reference horn...

The Flaring H 2 O Megamaser and Compact Radio Source in Mrk 348

We report on single-dish monitoring and extremely high angular resolution observations of the flaring H2O megamaser in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 348. The H2O line is redshifted by ∼130 km s with respect to the systemic velocity, is very broad, with a FWHM of 130 km s, and has no detectable high velocity components within 1500 km s on either side of the strong line. Monitoring observations made w...

Genesis of the 1000-foot Arecibo Dish

The giant radar/radio astronomy dish near Arecibo, Puerto Rico, was conceived by William E. Gordon in early 1958 as a back-scattering radar system to measure the density and temperature of the Earth’s ionosphere up to a few thousand kilometers. Gordon calculated the required size of the antenna by using the Thomson crosssection for scattering by the electrons, and assuming that the elementary s...
